Sales Specialist
Where no two days are quite the same, this could be a great opportunity to get stuck into the fast-moving world of fresh produce.
We’re looking for a Sales Specialist to join our Palmerston North team on a six-month fixed-term basis, with the potential for the role to become permanent.
This isn't a traditional sales role. You'll sit across sales, procurement, customer relationships and supplier management, helping get fresh produce from growers through to customers while making smart decisions around supply, demand and pricing.
What you'll be doing
You'll become a key part of the local market team, managing your own portfolio of produce and relationships.
Your day could include:
Checking what's arrived first thing in the morning and making sure customer orders are covered
Talking with customers to understand what they need and what's happening in the market
Working with growers and suppliers to secure the right product and supply
Negotiating prices and managing margins
Looking at supply and demand and working out where the opportunities are
Building strong relationships with growers, suppliers and customers
Managing product quality and resolving issues when things don't go to plan
Working closely with our procurement, trading, account management and logistics teams
Spotting opportunities to grow sales and introduce new products
Using market information and data to make commercial decisions
Fresh produce moves quickly. Prices, availability and customer demand can change from one day to the next, so you'll need to be comfortable making decisions, having conversations and adapting as you go.
What we're looking for
We're more interested in how you think and how you work than having a particular job title on your CV.
You might come from sales, retail, FMCG, hospitality, agriculture, account management or another commercial environment. You might even be looking to make your first move into the fresh produce industry.
What matters is that you are:
Proactive and don't wait for someone else to solve the problem
A confident communicator who can build relationships with all kinds of people
Commercially minded and comfortable negotiating and making decisions
Organised and able to keep a lot of moving parts under control
Naturally curious and interested in understanding how things work
Comfortable working at pace when things change
Practical and solutions-focused
Someone who gets stuck in and takes ownership
A good team player who can have a laugh along the way
You don't need to know everything about fresh produce on day one. We'll teach you the industry, our systems and our way of working. You'll have a proper induction, structured training and plenty of time alongside the team to build your knowledge.
Why T&G?
You'll be joining a business that has been growing fresh produce for generations, with a team that knows the industry inside out.
This is a great opportunity to learn from experienced people, build your commercial skills and get close to the action. And with the potential for the role to become permanent, it could be the start of something longer term.
The role is based at our Palmerston North market, so if you're looking for a role where you're part of the local business community rather than sitting behind a desk all day, you'll fit right in.
Hours: This is an early-starting market environment, with the day typically beginning around 5.30am. Flexibility is important, as customers and suppliers can need answers outside traditional office hours. Being organised and communicating well makes a big difference.
Contract: 6-month fixed term, with potential for the position to become permanent. While there is a genuine possibility of a permanent opportunity, this cannot be guaranteed.
If you're commercially curious, enjoy dealing with people and like the idea of learning an industry where things move quickly, we'd love to hear from you.
