Global Health & Safety Lead
Make safety matter where it matters most
At T&G Global, our purpose is simple: growing healthier futures.
For more than 125 years, we've been growing, packing, marketing and distributing fresh produce around the world. Our Apples business is at the heart of that story, with our premium ENVY™ and JAZZ™ brands enjoyed by consumers globally.
We're looking for an experienced Global Health & Safety Lead to join our Apples business and play a pivotal role in how we keep our people safe, strengthen operational ownership and lift health and safety maturity across the organisation.
This is not a role where you'll sit behind a desk waiting for work to come to you.
You'll be out in the operation, working alongside leaders and frontline teams, understanding the risks, challenging thinking, solving problems and making things happen.
A role with real scope and influence
This is a newly shaped senior role within our Apples leadership structure, created to bring greater consistency, connection and accountability to health and safety across the business.
Reporting to the General Manager Health, Safety, Risk and Compliance you'll partner closely with our Global Director of Operations and their leadership team, becoming a trusted part of the operational leadership environment. You'll have a key focus on our post-harvest operations in Hawke's Bay and Nelson, while also providing H&S leadership across our international Apples operations.
There is significant opportunity to make your mark.
We're continuing to build our critical risk programme, strengthen our approach to risk management and create greater consistency across our global operations. You'll also have the opportunity to contribute to major operational and capital projects, including the ongoing development and expansion of our packhouse operations.
You'll have the autonomy to identify where we can do better, engage the right people and drive improvements through to completion.
What you'll do
You'll translate our health and safety strategy into practical action across Global Apples, with a strong focus on execution and operational impact.
You'll:
Partner with the Global Director of Operations and senior leaders to strengthen safety leadership, accountability and ownership.
Lead the delivery of our critical risk programme, ensuring controls are practical, understood and consistently applied across operations.
Provide hands-on H&S leadership across post-harvest operations in Hawke's Bay and Nelson, with oversight of selected international operations.
Work alongside frontline teams and leaders to identify risks, solve problems and embed safer ways of working.
Use incident, risk and H&S data to identify trends, prioritise action and drive continuous improvement.
Lead and support incident investigations, assurance activities, contractor and labour hire management, and seasonal workforce capability.
Build H&S capability through coaching, engagement and practical support, creating a culture where leaders and workers take ownership of safety.
Provide trusted advice on legislation, regulatory requirements and emerging risks.
Partner on major operational and capital projects, including the continued development and expansion of our packhouse operations.
What we're looking for
We're looking for an experienced H&S professional who combines strong technical capability, operational credibility and the drive to get things done.
You'll bring:
Significant H&S experience in a high-risk operational environment, ideally food manufacturing, agriculture, horticulture, forestry, construction or a similar industry.
Strong understanding of critical risk management, including machinery, mobile plant, working at height and other high-risk activities.
Sound knowledge of NZ health and safety legislation and current regulatory developments.
Strong ability to interpret H&S data and turn insights into practical action.
Experience partnering with operational leaders and frontline teams, with the credibility to influence, coach and challenge when required.
A practical, proactive approach with the judgement to adapt your style to the situation, from collaborative coaching through to confidently making the call when something isn't safe.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage everyone from frontline workers to senior leaders.
A relevant tertiary qualification in H&S or a related discipline. Professional membership such as NZISM or IOSH is desirable.
Previous people leadership experience is advantageous, but not essential. We're more interested in your ability to lead through influence, build trust and deliver meaningful change.
The person we're looking for
You'll be someone who is comfortable moving between the boardroom and the frontline.
You can have a conversation with a senior leader about risk and strategy, then put your boots on and walk the floor with an operational team.
You won't be interested in H&S for the sake of H&S. You'll be interested in understanding the work, understanding the risk and finding practical ways to make it safer. You'll also be comfortable challenging people when required. Most importantly, you'll be curious, proactive and motivated to find the work rather than waiting for it to find you.
Why T&G?
This is an opportunity to join a business with genuine scale and global reach, while remaining close to the people, operations and communities that make our business work.
You'll have the opportunity to:
Make a visible difference to the safety of people working across complex, high-risk operations.
Shape the next chapter of H&S in Global Apples, bringing greater consistency and maturity across our operations.
Partner directly with operational leadership, with a genuine seat at the table rather than operating on the sidelines.
Work on significant operational and capital projects, including the continued development of our packhouse operations.
Broaden your international experience, working across Apples operations in New Zealand and selected global markets.
Take on a senior leadership opportunity with significant autonomy, visibility and scope.
Build your career with a clear pathway for growth, including the opportunity to develop into broader H&S leadership responsibilities over time.
Join a business that is purpose-led, values-driven and focused on doing the mahi and getting better.
At T&G, our mindsets are Be Bold, Do the Mahi, One Team and Take Good Care. They reflect how we want to work: taking ownership, challenging ourselves, working together and looking after our people and our communities.
You'll also have access to ongoing learning and development opportunities, flexible working options where the role allows, and a collaborative and supportive environment where people are encouraged to contribute, challenge and grow.
