Maintenance Team Leader

Due to continued growth across our Whakatu Post-Harvest operations, we’re looking for an experienced Maintenance Team Leader to join our Hastings-based packhouse team. This is a key replacement role created to support increased production demand and site expansion.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Whakatu Engineering & CAPEX Manager, you’ll lead the day-to-day coordination of maintenance activities across our busy packhouse facility.
You’ll ensure plant and equipment are operating safely and efficiently, minimise downtime, and support preventative maintenance programmes that keep production running smoothly.
This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll balance technical troubleshooting with team coordination and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
Operational Leadership
Provide first-line response to packing plant breakdowns and diagnose faults
Support and drive preventative maintenance programmes
Coordinate external contractors for servicing and repairs
Assist with installation, commissioning and upgrades of plant equipment
Maintain accurate maintenance records and job tracking
Monitor equipment performance and identify operational risks
Team Coordination
Supervise and delegate daily tasks to a team of 6 (including seasonal labour/contractors)
Lead toolbox talks and plan maintenance workloads
Provide on-the-job coaching and technical guidance
Foster a high-performance, team-focused environment
Health & Safety
Lead by example in all safety matters
Ensure compliance with H&S policies, audits and machine safety standards
Drive proactive risk management and reporting
Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to reduce downtime and improve asset reliability
Provide feedback on equipment performance and process improvements
Support initiatives that enhance efficiency and operational excellence
About You
You’ll bring strong technical experience within a production or FMCG environment, along with proven leadership capability.
Essential:
Trade qualification in engineering/maintenance (minimum Trade Cert or NZQA Engineering Level 4)
Minimum 5 years’ experience leading engineering or maintenance teams in a production environment
Strong fault-finding and analytical skills
Sound knowledge of Health & Safety and machine safety requirements
Excellent communication and planning skills
Desirable:
Experience within FMCG or post-harvest/packhouse environments
Understanding of the horticulture industry
You’re proactive, solutions-focused, and comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced operational setting.
